What to do when you are on transit at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia

If you were on transit between five to six hours at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), what will you do? Sit at the departure hall, reading books and sip a cup of coffee and wait for the departure time to fly again?  Why waste your time here. I am suggesting to you, get out of the airport and see Kuala Lumpur. How to go about it?

This tower is part of Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). One of the towers houses Suria KLCC Shopping Mall. The skybridge on the 41st floor is open to the public between 9.00am to 7.00pm.

Depending on your interest, you can choose the tallest building in Malaysia, Petronas Twin Towers or Bukit Bintang Shopping Street. Both places are located in the city centre.

If you decide to go to Twin Towers or Bukit Bintang, you have to take the fast train, Express Rail Link (ERL) to KL Sentral. The ride is only 28 minutes and the single journey fare is RM35.00. Once you reach the KL Sentral, for those who want to visit Twin Towers, take a light rapid transit train (Putra Line) to KLCC station. It is four stations from the KL Sentral at a cost of only RM2.00. The ride is only 20 minutes. So the time taken to go to this place is approximately 50 minutes. Therefore the return will be one hour and 40 minutes and the total fare will be RM74.00 only (USD22).

When you reach the KLCC station, go up at the exit and turn left to the Twin Towers. You will see many shops. You can choose to do shopping, visit eateries or food courts at level three, visit bookshop at level four (Kinokuniya). This is a time to taste Malaysian food. There are fast food outlets here like KFC, McDonald etc. If you have time you can visit a beautiful park nearby.

The water fountain at the Pavilion Shopping Complex.

If you choose to visit Bukit Bintang, once you reach KL Sentral, walk to the Monorail Station nearby. Take the monorail station KL Sentral and stop at Imbi or Bukit Bintang stations (five stations away). The monorail fare is RM2.00 (single journey). Here they are many shopping stores such as Times Square, Pavilion, Sungai Wang Plaza, Bukit Bintang Plaza or Low Yat (selling computer and accesories). You can buy whatever you want from shirts to hand phones. You can eat all kinds of dish too. Be it Malaysians, Turkishs, Indians, Chinese etc. If you want to explore this area, you need to stay a night here.

Make sure you make a perfect timing. Allowable time to be spent here is around 3 hours. You must leave this place at least two and half hours before boarding time. Otherwise you will be in a rush or miss your flight. Happy travel.
